Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ premiered on July 17, boasting an all-star cast with Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Matt Damon and more. Some of the filming for ‘The Odyssey’ took place on the dramatic coastline of the North East of Scotland.
Findlater Castle
One of the principal filming locations for The Odyssey, Findlater Castle sits on a spectacular cliff-top overlooking the Moray Firth and stands in for the mythical island of Aeaea and the village of Ithaca. The castle itself is unsafe to access, but visitors can enjoy stunning views from the viewpoint and coastal path.
Sunnyside Beach
This wide, sandy beach featured in scenes where Odysseus and his crew came ashore. Even outside its film connection, it’s a beautiful place for a walk and wildlife spotting.
Culbin Forest and Beach (Moray)
Culbin Forest provided the setting for scenes where Odysseus and his crew entered the forest after landing on shore. Discover the tragic history of this volatile and allegedly cursed, environment, starting with the Great Sand Drift in 1694 which turned a prosperous farming community into a desert!
Burghead, Buckie and Portsoy harbours were all also used by the crew and stars during filming. And the Seafield Arms Hotel hosted many of the cast as well as being transformed into a production hub.
